Buy some of Harry Specters’ delectable chocolate gifts this Christmas and help to provide employment and training for young people with autism.
The season of giving and festive cheer is upon us and it’s time to start thinking about presents for loved ones and about stuffing your face with sweet treats. Well, Harry Specters are helping to make both of these tasks more purposeful through their range of incredible chocolate products. For every box or bag of deliciousness that you buy, you’ll be helping to support their work in improving the career outlook for hundreds of autistic youngsters across the UK.
According to Autism UK, only 16% of autistic adults in the UK are in full-time paid employment. This isn’t a very bright outlook for young people with autism, especially given that only 10% of autistic adults receive employment support (53% say they want it). Workplaces are typically not set up to enable autistic employees to flourish and there are fewer businesses willing to take on those with development disabilities.
The founder of Harry Specters, Mona Shah, came up with the idea for her social enterprise whilst on a family holiday in Scotland. She’d always had a passion for chocolate as a consumer, but had never considered producing it until she joined a chocolate-making workshop and that’s where the ‘Eureka!’ moment happened. The production process is typically very ordered and precise, which she decided would be ideal for her son, Ash, who is autistic. From here, she put the wheels in motion and began producing chocolates from her garage and conservatory, which had at this point been turned into the packaging & distribution hub.
Harry Specters has grown rapidly since then, meaning Mona and her team have been able to support young people with autism in lots of important ways. They now employ over ten autistic people as well as offering free training and mentoring to help young people into employment. For every £1 of profit made at Harry Specters, Mona and Shaz put aside 60p for furthering the social aims of the business, providing social activities for their invaluable employees as well as opportunities for their personal development.
Just in time for Christmas, Harry Specters have released a brand new range of absolutely delicious new products and flavours, including: Peanut Butter Filled Bar, Dark Hazelnut Filled Bar and Caramel and Brownie Slab. Yum. So if you want to do double the giving this Christmas, or you want to feel less guilty about demolishing a whole selection box, then here’s your answer.
